Hand building with clay is a wonderful way to express creativity while enjoying a tactile and satisfying experience. With just some clay and a few basic tools, the possibilities are virtually endless! Here are some fun and inventive projects to try your hand at:

Students can use underglaze in many of our workshops to add detail to their work.

1. Pinch Pots- Pinch pots are a perfect starting point for beginners. Simply take a ball of clay, press your thumb into the center, and pinch the walls to form a small bowl. These little pots are versatile—you can use them for holding jewelry, snacks, or as part of decorative pieces like pieces made in our Vase Handbuilding Workshop. Plus, you can decorate them with patterns, textures, or glazes to give them a personal touch.

2. Sculptures- Let your imagination run wild with clay sculptures! Whether you want to create abstract forms or representational figures, the hand-building technique allows for creative freedom. Think about animals, whimsical characters, or even human figures. This project encourages you to play with shape and texture while honing your sculpting skills.

3. Mugs and Cups- Creating your own mugs or cups can be a delightful experience. Use the slab-building technique to roll out clay sheets and then cut and assemble them to form the shape of your desired vessel. Students can make their own mug in our Slab Built Mug workshop. You can add handles and personalize each piece with carvings or textures, making them functional as well as beautiful.
